As technological progress surges to unprecedented levels, the forthcoming wave of smartphones is on the brink of reshaping our digital encounters. These devices are not only set to introduce pioneering designs but also revolutionary features, all geared towards captivating a global audience.

In this article, we delve into the world of the most highly anticipated smartphones, offering a glimpse into the future of communication and connectivity. So, hold tight as we unveil the potential game-changers that are set to dominate the market in the coming year.

Top 10 New Upcoming Smartphones in 2023 and Beyond

1: Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

Expected Release Date: October 2023

Expected Price: $699-$999

Image: Nextgenphone

Typically, Google maintains its reputation for unveiling highly capable new smartphone models in the latter part of the year, and it appears that 2023 will adhere to this pattern.

Anticipated for an October release, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are poised to showcase refined aesthetics, upgraded internal components, and an enhanced camera system compared to their predecessors.

Additionally, these devices will likely operate on the Android 14 operating system, which has been undergoing public beta testing over the past few months.

Amid the circulating speculations, a prevailing notion suggests that Google will opt not to venture into the high-end market segment. Instead, the focus is on retaining accessible storage options and, hopefully, introducing price points that won’t heavily burden consumers’ budgets.

2: OnePlus V Fold and V Flip

Expected Release Date: August 2023

Expected Price: $890-$1000

Image: Nextgenphone

While the OnePlus 11 boasts commendable features, its allure pales in comparison to the potential of the OnePlus foldable smartphone. Despite CEO Pete Lau’s assertion that foldable devices lack substantial value, whispers of OnePlus entering the foldable market began circulating in May 2022.

Reports suggested that OnePlus might draw inspiration from the OPPO Find N to create its inaugural foldable gadget in 2023.

Subsequently, the company has pursued hinge-related patents and secured trademarks for names like OnePlus V Fold and OnePlus V Flip, which align with logical nomenclature.

Nonetheless, indications point to a potential change of heart, with more recent speculations hinting at the device being named OnePlus Open. Even OnePlus itself dropped hints about the forthcoming device’s name through a tweet.

3: Apple iPhone 16 Series

Expected Release Date: 10 September 2024

Expected Price: $1199-$1399

Image: Nextgenphone

Apple has recently unveiled its latest iPhone model, the iPhone 15 series for 2023. However, the tech world is abuzz with speculation, leaks and insider insights already hinting at what the 2024 iPhone 16 lineup might bring.

One of the most significant anticipated changes with the iPhone 16 lineup is the size increase for the Pro models. It’s rumoured that the iPhone 16 Pro will sport a 6.27-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a larger 6.86-inch screen. This marks a notable departure from previous years where sizes remained relatively constant.

Apple is also said to be working on cutting-edge A-series chips for the iPhone 16 series. While specific details on performance enhancements and efficiency improvements are yet to be confirmed, Apple’s track record suggests significant gains in these areas.

Another intriguing development in the iPhone 16 lineup is the potential introduction of capacitive buttons for volume control, the power button, and a new “Action Button” across all four models.

Well, as with any early rumours, it’s important to remember that Apple’s plans can evolve before the official release. Therefore, the information provided here may undergo changes as Apple refines its designs for the upcoming iPhone models.

4: Samsung Galaxy S23 FE

Expected Release Date: Q1 2024

Expected Price: $700

image: Nextgenphone

While the S22 FE was notably absent from Samsung’s releases, speculations indicate that the company intends to revive its “Fan Edition” flagship with the upcoming S23 lineup this year.

Early leaks suggest a design that bears a striking resemblance to the mid-range Galaxy A54, and the device is anticipated to be fueled by Samsung’s proprietary Exynos 2200 chipset.

The focal point of interest is expected to be the camera system, as indications strongly suggest that the S23’s primary camera will make a return in a more budget-friendly iteration for this model.

5: Xiaomi 14 Series

Expected Release Date: Q1 2024

Expected Price: $1099-$1499

Image: Nextgenphone

In its customary fashion, Xiaomi has a tradition of introducing its sequentially numbered flagship smartphones within China in December, followed by a subsequent global release in the early months of the following year.

Consequently, these patterns form our expectations for the forthcoming Xiaomi 14 series.

While specific specifications remain undisclosed at the moment, a highly probable enhancement is the adoption of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

Leaked information thus far has also indicated advancements in charging speed and battery capacity. Moreover, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the 1-inch primary camera sensor featured in the Pro and Ultra variants were to make its way into the standard model of the series.

6: OnePlus 12

Expected Release Date: February 2024

Expected Price: $699-$799

Image: Nextgenphone

While concrete details about the OnePlus 12 are currently scarce, indications suggest that the forthcoming flagship of the next generation is poised for an early 2024 release.

Initial leaks allude to a 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED screen, an anticipated transition to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and a potentially captivating enhancement in the form of a periscope zoom camera – a pioneering step for OnePlus.

Numerous aspects remain under wraps, but the anticipation is that more comprehensive information will be unveiled in the near future.

7: Oppo Find N3 Flip

Expected Release Date: August 2023

Expected Price: $1199

Image: Nextgenphone

Oppo’s Find N2 Flip made its debut in China towards the end of the year and was subsequently launched globally a few months later.

This pattern leads us to believe that a similar timeline will be followed this year. Just as before, it’s probable that the Flip version will receive international exposure, while the larger Find N3 might remain confined to the domestic market.

As of now, details about the upcoming Oppo flip phone remain undisclosed. Given that this will only be the company’s second iteration, it’s reasonable to anticipate more of an evolutionary rather than revolutionary progression. As such, one can expect a design and features somewhat akin to the first-generation model.

8: Samsung Galaxy S24

Expected Release Date: February 2024

Expected Price: $800-$1299

Image: Nextgenphone

Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup continues to be among the most sought-after smartphones not bearing the Apple emblem.

The recent S23 trio, comprising the S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra, showcased iterative advancements rather than significant leaps compared to their predecessors. As the anticipation for 2024 builds, there’s optimism that Samsung will unveil something extraordinary.

Present speculations hint at the possibility that the S24+ might not materialise, as the company seems inclined to concentrate on a two-model lineup instead. However, with no firm decisions until next February, there remains ample room for shifts in plans.

9: Pixel G10/Pixel 7 Ultra

Expected Release Date: October 2023

Expected Price: $1000

Image: Nextgenphone

The Pixel G10 emerges as a rather enigmatic device, as the information at hand merely indicates its development and its possession of a display akin to the 7 Pro.

Amidst the speculations surrounding the Pixel 7a series, yet another unannounced Pixel variant has surfaced: the Pixel G10. However, the exact nature of this device remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Tentatively boasting a generous 6.7-inch QuadHD screen – mirroring the Pixel 7 Pro’s specifications – it could potentially be the Pixel 7 Ultra, though definitive conclusions are evasive at this point.

10: The iPhone SE 4

Expected Release Date: Q4 2024

Expected Price: $399-$499

Image: Nextgenphone

Apple appears to have adopted a biannual pattern for introducing its budget-friendly iPhone SE models, evident from the releases in 2020 and 2022. Therefore, expectations point towards the forthcoming iteration making its appearance in early 2024.

The most significant uncertainty revolves around whether Apple will embrace a full-screen design for this phone, leading to the permanent elimination of the Home Button. This transition could potentially entail the inclusion of Face ID in the SE series for the first time.

It’s important to acknowledge that certain rumours have hinted at the potential cancellation of the SE 4 model. Consequently, there exists a certain degree of uncertainty surrounding its eventual release.

Why Are These Upcoming Smartphones Worth the Wait?

Without a doubt, in the years 2023 and 2024, a number of new smartphones will enter the market, promising amazing developments and upgrades. But what exactly makes these upcoming smartphones worth the anticipation?

However, there are speculations that Samsung might reintroduce Exynos chips in some units of the upcoming Galaxy S24 in the following year.

The dark, satanic rumour mill has churned out another story that suggests that in 2025, certain units of the Galaxy S25 will embrace the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. This latest Snapdragon offering is expected to showcase Nuvia CPU cores, which promise enhanced performance and efficiency.

TSMC’s advanced 3nm (N3E) fabrication process will be used to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, which will include two high-performance Phoenix CPU cores and four power-efficient Phoenix CPU cores.

In addition to the Snapdragon option, there are whispers of Samsung working on a completely revamped Exynos chip, referred to as the “dream” chip.

This in-house processor is designed from scratch to cater to Samsung’s flagship phones and boasts a more potent AMD GPU. It is believed that some Galaxy S25 units might feature this new and powerful Samsung-made processor.

As the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 launch is expected before the end of 2024, Samsung seems to be embracing a more diverse approach to processor selection, offering users a variety of chip options to suit their preferences and needs.

Vodafone has taken significant strides in improving 4G coverage for its customers in the Scottish rural communities of Ae and Loch Head in Dumfries and Galloway.

This advancement is part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN), a £1bn collaborative effort between the UK Government and the four major mobile network operators.

The Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative aims to extend 4G coverage to 91% of the Scottish landmass, building upon Vodafone’s substantial investment in bringing 4G coverage to 99% of UK premises.

To achieve this, the program employs mast sharing on existing sites in rural areas where some providers lack coverage. Additionally, the SRN (Shared Rural Network) constructs new shared masts to connect areas that currently have no coverage at all.

With the installation of these masts in various locations across Scotland, Vodafone has already boosted its coverage at 49 sites, including places like Balmacara (Ross-shire), Ettrick (Scottish Borders), Lockerbie (Scottish Borders), New Luce (Dumfries and Galloway) and Traquair (Peeblesshire).

UK Government Minister for Data and Digital Infrastructure Sir John Whittingdale said:

We want everyone to have access to reliable, high-quality mobile connectivity regardless of where they live or work, so it’s great to see Vodafone improve 4G coverage for residents in and around Ae and Loch Head.  This is thanks to our £1bn Shared Rural Network programme, which is driving connectivity in some of the most rural parts of the UK – helping to grow the economy and create opportunity by boosting coverage in areas that need it most.

Andrea Dona, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone UK, said:

We continue to invest in our network to ensure our customers continue to enjoy our most reliable network. However, connecting rural and hard-to-reach parts of the UK can be restricted by cost.  The Shared Rural Network initiative means the UK network operators can work together to ensure people living and working in those areas have a choice of network, as well as ensuring we are nearer to closing the digital divide.

This substantial investment is part of Vodafone’s ongoing network modernization program, which includes the retirement of its 3G network, further focusing on strengthening 4G connectivity and supporting the country’s digital transformation.

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Tab S9 series, but wait there’s more in store. The company has been working on FE-branded Galaxy Tab S9 models and the information has been slowly leaking out.

Back in June, a reliable source in the display supply chain revealed the launch-day colors for the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and FE+. Just recently, the FE+ model also passed through the FCC’s certification database.

Now, thanks to a Bixby landing page in Samsung France, we’ve got some accidental confirmation about the arrival of these two devices( Also Spotted in Roland Quandt’s Tweet ).

Galaxy Tab S9 FE / Tab S9 FE+ naming confirmed by Samsung dot com https://t.co/FGHALCBrU4 pic.twitter.com/ApDZwJIrHp

— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) August 4, 2023

It seems like Samsung made a slip-up since the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+ are yet to be officially unveiled. But here’s the catch – scrolling to the bottom of the Bixby page unveils the two new tablets in all their glory.

Surprisingly, the page is still up, though it wouldn’t be surprising if Samsung rushes to change that soon. As of now, the Bixby landing page in the US doesn’t show any such information, suggesting that the leak is specific to Samsung’s French division.

Adding more fuel to the fire, this unofficial confirmation of the two upcoming budget tablets aligns with the information we’ve gathered about the Galaxy S23 FE, which a Samsung executive confirmed not too long ago.

It seems that both the midrange phone and the FE-branded tablets are set to launch around the same time, though the exact date remains a mystery for now.

The Galaxy Tab S9 FE and FE+ Features

According to leaks, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE will boast a 10.9-inch screen, while its larger sibling, the Tab S9 FE+, might come with a spacious 12.4-inch display.

As for the design, it’s likely to resemble the Galaxy Tab S9 series, with most of the changes happening under the hood. Expect a swap from Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to an Exynos chip, and a move from AMOLED to an LCD unit, all in the name of cost-cutting.

If these leaks are accurate, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE duo will follow in the footsteps of the mid-2021 Galaxy Tab S7 FE. Samsung seems to have made the strategic decision to skip a generation of its budget tablet series, a move it also pulled with the Galaxy S23 FE, jumping straight from the Galaxy S21 FE.

Official Launch Date

While we wait for the official launch, Samsung has already opened pre-orders for the recently unveiled trio of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, and they come with some tempting promotions. These tablets are slated to start shipping on August 11.

In a recent development, tech giant Apple has created a prototype of a foldable iPhone, adding fuel to the anticipation of its potential entry into the foldable smartphone market.

While Apple has been reluctant to embrace the bendable phone trend, a patent discovery has sparked speculation that the company may be preparing to launch a foldable iPhone or iPad as early as next year.

Samsung’s mobile boss, James Kitto, revealed in an exclusive interview that,

I think other sizeable brands out there will eventually follow suit with folding phones.

He also said that Apple has a history of lagging behind in terms of innovation, but he expects them to eventually join the foldable phone segment.

Well, Samsung has been a driving force in popularising foldable phones, with its Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 gaining traction in various markets, particularly in the UK where sales of folding smartphones surged by 200% in 2022.

While the market for foldable phones is still relatively small, accounting for just 1% of global smartphone shipments in 2023, industry analysts believe that Apple’s entry could accelerate mainstream adoption, much like its introduction of 5G smartphones boosted the 5G market.

Despite Samsung’s confidence in its position as an innovation leader, research firm CCS Insight suggests that Apple may not venture into foldables until 2024, and even then, it might start with a folding iPad rather than an iPhone Flip.

Amidst these speculations, Samsung remains committed to pushing the boundaries of smartphone design. The company has filed numerous patents for smartphones featuring rollable, scrollable and slidable displays, indicating its intention to go beyond traditional monoblock or folding designs.

As the competition heats up, it remains to be seen whether Apple will indeed launch a foldable device in the near future.

However, with Samsung already making significant strides in the foldable market and exploring further innovations, the stage is set for a dynamic evolution of smartphones in the coming years.

Following the clearance from a judge, Apple is set to distribute a $500 million settlement among participants in a class-action lawsuit from 2020. The lawsuit emerged subsequent to Apple’s acknowledgment of deliberately reducing the performance of specific iPhone models in 2017.

Individuals eligible for compensation include claimants who owned qualifying iPhone models. These models encompass the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and SE, all operating on iOS 10.2.1 or newer before December 21, 2017.

Photo by Benny Bowden on Unsplash

Additionally, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus running iOS 11.2 or later before the same date are also part of the eligible group. Each claimant will receive approximately $65 as part of the settlement.

The settlement granted a sum ranging from $310 to $500 million, which will be divided among over 3 million claimants. However, the exact payment amount for customers remains uncertain, with the estimated figure of $65.

It’s important to note that not all owners of the mentioned iPhone models will receive compensation, as the opportunity to join the lawsuit was only available until October 6, 2020.

In 2018, Apple faced allegations of intentionally reducing the performance of the mentioned iPhone models in response to user reports of unforeseen shutdowns spanning from 2015 to 2016.

These shutdowns occurred abruptly, regardless of the devices holding more than 30% battery capacity.

This issue arose due to the incongruity between the hardware capabilities and the escalating requirements of the frequently updated iOS, which serves as the operating system for iPhones.

Responding to these grievances, Apple took note and introduced a software update aimed at resolving the shutdown issue.

Nevertheless, this update employed a strategy of performance throttling solely for these iPhones. The objective was to “mitigate the occurrence of unanticipated device shutdowns” during cold temperatures, instances of low battery charge, or the aging of the device. This approach was elucidated in a statement provided during that period.

In 2017, following its acknowledgment of deliberately reducing performance on certain older iPhone models to preempt other shutdown complications, Apple became entangled in the lawsuit.

Consequently, the source of these enhancements becomes inconsequential in light of the benefits bestowed upon Galaxy S23 users.

As reported by SamMobile, the most recent update for the Camera Assistant application introduces an innovative zoom feature, elevating the Galaxy S23’s prowess as a top-tier camera phone. The official changelog outlines that the updated Camera Assistant version now grants users access to an optimised 2x zoom function within the Photo mode.

For Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra owners, a fresh 2x zoom toggle is available within the default Camera app. However, it’s crucial to ensure the Optical Quality Crop Zoom feature is activated in the Camera Assistant app beforehand.

Furthermore, enjoying these novel camera enhancements mandates the installation of the August 2023 security patch on your Galaxy S23 series smartphone.

Designed to match the quality of a dedicated optical zoom lens, the enhanced 2x zoom alternative represents a distinct addition.

This feature sets itself apart from the existing 30x or 100x zoom choices found on the Samsung Galaxy S23/S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Unlike the latter options, the newly introduced 2x zoom is refined to ensure optimal performance.

Last month marked the debut of Nothing’s second smartphone, the Phone (2), featuring the latest Nothing OS 2.0 – the second iteration of the company’s tailored Android interface. Just a few weeks later, founder Carl Pei announced that the eagerly awaited Nothing OS 2.0 update would be available for Phone (1) users before August ends.

Image: Nothing Phone

In keeping with their commitment, Nothing’s official X (formerly Twitter) account has announced that the update is set to commence its rollout to Phone (1) devices in the upcoming week.

Nevertheless, the company has refrained from disclosing an exact date for the launch of Nothing OS 2.0 on the Phone (1). Thus, it is reasonable to anticipate a phased deployment of the update throughout the course of the following week.

The wait is almost over.

We've been cooking up Nothing OS 2.0 for Phone (1), and as promised it'll be out next week. https://t.co/7UOnkTaYMP

— Nothing (@nothing) August 22, 2023

Nothing OS 2.0 update for Phone 1

Although Nothing’s X announcement remained discreet about the specifics of the latest software, it’s common knowledge that Nothing OS 2.0 draws its foundation from Android 13. Among the standout elements of Nothing OS 2.0 are its monochrome app icons, novel widgets, customisable lock screens, the functionality to secure individual apps, and the support for cloning apps.

Significantly, Nothing stands by its commitment to furnish users with an uncluttered interface. There’s a complete absence of pre-installed bloatware, and the timeless dot-matrix font continues to grace the entire UI.

The update aligns seamlessly with Nothing’s commitment to deliver three years of substantial Android updates and an extended four-year span of security updates for the Phone (1).

This signifies that the Phone (1) is now slated to welcome both the Android 14 and Android 15 updates, followed by an additional year of security patches.

With the expected arrival of Android 14, Nothing is actively engaged in its Android 14 beta program. This offers you the opportunity to experience Android 14 firsthand on your Nothing Phone by accessing the latest beta version.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that beta releases represent pre-release software, potentially containing instability and bugs.

According to an analyst Ming-Chu Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is poised to capture a significant share of orders within the 15 series, ranging from 35% to 40%.

Kuo’s estimations also indicate that the 15 Pro Max could experience sales growth of 10% to 20% higher when compared to the sales performance of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Moreover, Kuo’s report highlights a standout feature of the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max – an exclusive periscope zoom camera.

Not only this, Kuo also anticipates that the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro will also incorporate a periscope camera, which is expected to contribute significantly to its success in the market.

Largan is reportedly the exclusive provider of periscope modules for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Interestingly, Largan also dominates the periscope lens market for Huawei, a leading Chinese phone manufacturer known for rapidly integrating periscope cameras.

This year, Huawei is anticipated to ship 15–20 million devices equipped with periscope cameras, and projections suggest this number could reach 30 million next year.

Largan stands to gain a significant business advantage given that these periscope lenses are rumoured to cost 3 to 4 times more than conventional high-end 7P lenses.

In other developments, the upcoming iPhone 15 series (excluding the Pro models) might bring back the green colour choice, as hinted by Majin Bu on X (formerly referred to as Twitter).

The iPhone 15 series could receive the green color. A mockup of this color was also made. It looks like it will be very similar to the green already seen on the iPhone 12 series. pic.twitter.com/8MI8kJciw6

Majin Bu showcased images displaying seemingly colour-coordinated USB-C ports designed for the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup. These images feature a range of colour options, including green, blue, white and black.
